I can’t remember how it was presented, if it was in the living room when I woke up, or out in the garage… On my sixth Christmas I was given the shiniest, brightest, bluest bicycle a girl had ever seen. (My little brother also received a bike that year!)
My parents desperately wanted to give me a bike, but I guess they couldn’t find a girl’s one in my size, because I got a boy’s bike. I remember my mom appologizing and me really not caring that the bar went straight across instead of slanted… All I cared about was that it was my own, and it was shiny! Mom had gotten some of that gift wrapping ribbon that curls, and she made beautiful pink and white streamers for my handlebars.
Since I hadn’t owned a bike before, mom and dad got me some training wheels. I was the cautious type and scared to death to take them off. Only after my baby brother (3yrs younger than me) took his off, was I embarrassed enough to try. I remember it took a while, but mom and dad were patient and held onto my seat till I was ready to go.
I finally learned to ride without the training wheels and little brother and I had a great couple of years…
Till I accidently left the bike on the driveway, behind dad’s car, and it got hit.
I’ll always remember that bike because it was the only new bike I ever got, and it’s the one I learned to ride on!
Share your bicycle memories for a chance to win a bike for you kiddo!
