Headquarters Gets a Makeover

Working from home has it’s advantages, many of which are so fabulous they’d make the 9-5ers jealous. But, there are a few disadvantages as well. For me, the lack of a real office has been the biggest drawback. I tend to work at the dining room table just so I can be near my son while he plays, but I can’t keep all my paperwork, my printer, and supplies in the dining room. It’s just not cut out for that. So, for the past few years I’ve been using two beat up desks I found free via Freecylce. I’d put them together to form an L-shaped desk and just lived with the fact that I had no drawers and no shelves. I made do with desktop organizers and tried not to look at that corner of my bedroom.

This year I decided I wanted a real desk. The desk I’ve always dreamed of having. I’d work hard for it if I had to. And, I did. In June I made enough money, off one client, to pay for the desk I wanted. I went to Office Max to window shop and the desk I wanted was actually on clearance. I figured up how much money I’d spend and over the weekend I told my husband about it and took him to look at it. After all, the desk would be in our room and I wanted to make sure he liked it. The store was closing so we decided we’d pick it up Monday evening…

When I walked in Monday evening the store manager was leaning against the desk, talking to another employee. Turns out, they were discussing how to get the desk moved. As in, SOLD. Fast. I pointed to the desk and said “I came to buy that desk.” The manager promptly asked if I’d buy the floor model if he gave me an additional discount…. Um, how much? He did some calculations and said if I bought the file drawers as well he’d give me the whole setup for under $400. HELLO!!

And so, I’ve welcomed the most beautiful office furniture into my bedroom. At over $200 discount. And, yes, it’s the piece I’ve always wanted.
