What is the Importance of a Family Vacation?

Vacations. We all long for them. And, the word means something different to each person.

When I was little, vacation meant driving for two days, spending a week with my grandparents, then driving home. My dad loved to travel and often made the drive fun by playing games in the car, packing balls and frisbees to play with on our stops, and my making the trip home an extension of the vacation fun. By the time I was 14 I had seen most of the eastern united states, all the the history of Washington, DC, decided Chattanooga, TN was my favorite vacation spot (hubs and I honeymooned there!) and had explored more caves and caverns, aquariums and historic places than any child I knew. His love for adventure made every trip something to remember for a lifetime.

Since I’ve been married, and moved away from home, I’ve traveled a lot. Usually to see my folks. We don’t have as much time to do the extravagant things, but we still try and have fun! My husband and I both love to travel, and if the word ‘adventure’ is involved, our three year old will agree to anything.

Whether vacation means a cruise, or a two-hour trip to the zoo, it is important for families to take some time out to spend together… to leave the TV, work, and chores behind and just have fun together. You don’t have to spend a lot or go to famous places. You just need to take a break and focus on one another. When you get home, help the kids make a scrapbook to preserve the memories!

Vacations are part of the Work/Play balance. Having fun refreshes you, motivates you, and keeps you young!

I am writing this post to participate in the Golden Inn Resort “What is the importance of a Vacation” sweepstakes for a chance to randomly win a full conference ticket to Blogher 2010. You can learn more about the Jersey Shore Resort and contest at their blog http://www.GoldenInnResort.com/vacationtips.

Vacations mean lots of different things to different people. We vacationed to grandparents houses a lot when growing up too. Good luck on the contest! http://goldeninnresort.com/vacationtips

I've worked some with the hotel's social media gal, Elizabeth… She is sooo fabulous and I would LOVE to finally meet her in person!

It is interesting that I used to think that vacation is all about leaving your work and daily routine behind.
Last year I tried something else. While the family was still sleeping in the morning, I spent a couple of hours of email, voice mail, and other “important” stuff just to stay in touch and ensure that the work is going on. In return, I got the rest of the day free. I managed to spend about 50 days like this. I enjoyed it much better than my 12 days off five years ago.
