Whether you’re wanting a new background for your Myspace page or you’re designing a blog for a client, finding the perfect background image can be time consuming. There are thousands of them out there and finding a pattern you like, in the color you need is quite a daunting task!
Why not make your own custom background?

Tartan Maker – Plaid is in. Have some fun with this tartan background maker that lets you change the line weights and colors to create your own unique plaid.
Gradient Image Maker by Dynamic Drive. There are lots of gradient generators out there, but I’m partial to Dynamic drive’s tools, so I’m listing this one. 
Tile Machine – If you’re really creative you might enjoy making your own repeating background.

Here is a little twist I plan to implement with these. Design a nice background, drop an image onto it then crop it, leaving a custom border. Provides an alternative to the plain colors we always see.

That just sounds mean, ha,ha..
Backgrounds are one of those things no one, even a designer, wants to
deal with. Getting something just right so that it repeats evenly across
a page is a pain in the rear. Especially with things like diagonal
lines. These tools make lazy designers like myself very happy.

These are cool! I didn't know there was such a thing, but I can see the same application Jimi suggested working well.
I used to try make tiled web backgrounds myself until I found sites like this that do it all for you. But then if you need something unique then you still have to bite the bullet and make it yourself.
Some of those backgrounds can really be dangerous to the eyes.
