Experiencing Major Technical Difficulties

Share

Yes, the new look is live! And no, it’s not what has caused the problems…

For some time now I’ve been experiencing problems with certain parts of my WordPress install… For example: I couldn’t use the Quick Edit feature, and now, I can’t even get to Posts/Edit.

I thought it was WordPress 2.9. So, I upgraded… Seemed to work ok, but I didn’t try the things that hadn’t been working previously. I went strait to Plugins…

When I tried to upgrade a plugin, the site went into maintenance mode (something I haven’t seen before) and the update stalled. The site wouldn’t come out of maintenance. The whole thing crashed.

I uploaded WordPress 2.9.1 again, and the site is now running. However, all the problems remain and I have a message across the top that reads “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now. (with a link) NO WAY!!

ARRRRGGGGG!

Why does WordPress hate me???

The secrets to blogging success

  • You'll figure it out...you always do! That's why you rock at what you do!
  • That's a bummer. Normally something goes wrong with a Wordpress upgrade but the last two for me have been seamless. Remember the old saying, to err is human, to totally screw things up requires a computer.
  • Oh yes! Computers do like to think they know more than we do.

At first, WP 2.9 worked great for me, but over time I started experiencing major backend problems off and on. Starting to wonder if it's even WP? Could be something wrong with my database? My husband can probably figure it out... He's a dateabase genius. :-)

  • Have you optimised the database recently? After all those updates, it might be a good idea.
  • Update:

My backend seems to be functioning ok, tho I'm still getting that stupid message at the top telling me I should re-try the auto update of that plugin, which I have since upgraded manually. Yea right.

My problem now is that my drop-down menus are not working. Like I said, I've turned off my plugins, to make sure that wasn't it. I removed all widgets that could have been conflicting... still not working. These work fine on the site I used to test/modify the theme. ARGGG!
  • Hey, I will get to that post in a minute but first...
I love this new look. You did a fantastic job and it really looks great. :-)

Geez - what a nightmare. Sorry you are having issues, my first thought while reading this was the plugins, but you've already been there. I am here via Google's Chrome browser and all looks fine from this side.
Sure hope you get this issue off of your plate soon.

  • Jimi,

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm loving the new, lightweight feel of the site. It's refreshing to me after a dark, narrow theme!

Yea, slowly working out the kinks. Like I said, these have been going on for months, and they come and go. Some days my backend works like a charm. Some days it's slow, and some times parts of it don't work at all. I'm starting to think maybe someone hacked my DB?? Surely not!!
  • Oh dear....This does sound major.
I always get a 'maintenance mode' message too.
But a quick refresh of the browser usually brings it back to normal.
I assume you're using the one-click auto update.
    You could try upgrading manually?
  • Yea, I have no idea what I'm going to do. I can now access my plugins page, so I was able to deactiveate them one at a time to try and solve some of my issues (drop-down nav isn't working, and it works fine on my testing site) and none of the plugins seem to be the problem.

I went ahead and did a manual update of the plugin that caused me trouble. It upgraded and works fine, but I'm still getting that message at the top of my screen, telling me to try again. There's no way I'm touching that after it crashed last time!
  • I also like the new-look blog :-) Nice One!!
