My Week: Building a Portfolio

Wow. The past few days have been a little hairy. I really expected to blog more, but it just hasn’t been happening.

Here’s what’s going on…

My design business has been picking up and as the year draws to an end, clients are pushing for first-of-the-year launches.

Client #1 – Pro Golf Instructor
Has an HTML website. SEO is good and they don’t want to goof that up, so instead of re-doing the whole site they just wanted me to fix the blog to match.
Problem: WordPress install was so old it couldn’t be updated. After much deliberation we decided to copy a few of the old posts, delete WordPress and start over. Found a theme that could be modified to match the html site. Almost exactly I might add. Loving how it’s turning out.
Project 90% complete.

Client #2 – Pediatrician/Speaker
Has old HTML site + Blogspot Blog. 2 Separate domains. Wants to combine sites using WordPress. Whole new look, re-brand, the works.
Theme decided upon, colors picked (I think. Waiting on final decision) and some major theme modifications are underway.
Started project today.

Client #3 – New Health-Drink Company
This isn’t really a client… not yet anyway. ;-)
I found a design competition in which the winner receives a ticket to a cool blog conference. The project was to make a branded Twitter background for this company.
Completed and Submitted last night.

Client #4 – Local Coffee Shop
Labels, Labels, Gift Cards, and more Labels!!! The Christmas season is here and the shop is busy! I’ve printed and delivered over 1500 labels in the past two weeks. Earlier this week I delivered 80 gift cards. They called today with a rush order for more. Insane.
But, where else could I deliver and get to smell coffee???

January 1st isn’t that far away. I’m not pushing any deadlines yet, and I plan to keep it that way.

What’s on your plate? Any end-of-the-year projects?

  1. Erica,

You sound SO BUSY – but I bet you love it that way!

As you asked, yes, I am planning the launch of my Income Blogging course (you know the one you have been kindly reviewing).

Just entering launch mode now all ready for an early Jan launch. Will be writing to JV's over the next few days.

    Exciting times!

    Andrew

I wish you much success with the design contest Erica. You are indeed very busy. I'd rather be busy then looking for work to do.
Right now I am focused on getting Clients booked for Workshops in January. Especially since Workshop Hosts will get extra rewards for hosting.
Wishing you a picture perfect day!

Sounds exciting, Patty! It's such a blessing to be able to do what we love, isn't it?? You seem to really enjoy scrapping and the business you've been able to build from that is sure to go far with your enthusiasm for the niche!

    Have a great weekend!

I have also installed disqus comment form on my blog. I also installed top commentator widget on my blog. I want that top commentator get backlink from my blog, but on the top commentator list instead of showing the link of top commentators it showing disqus link. So how you do it? Please if you inform me I will greatly thankful to you.

Hi! So glad you stopped by. Hopefully you'll find some useful tidbits here, even if you're not a WordPress user. I do offer how-to for Facebook, reviews of software, and other things from time to time.

Feel free to comment, share some advice, and join the conversations!

I believe the trick is not to use the DISQUS top commentors widget/tool, but the “Top Commentators Widget” plugin available here: http://webgrrrl.net/archives/my-top-commentator… It will add a widget that you can put in your sidebar and then you can customize that.

I'm not sure if this plugin will work for Blogger or not.
