Shortening Permalink URL’s for SEO and Shorter Links

Setting Permalink Structure in WordPressWordPress offers several permalink options, and while their standard numbering system produces the shortest urls, most bloggers like to use the Month/Name or configure a custom structure for search engine optimization.

However, pulling the title of your post into the url can make for a very long link, and ofttimes that includes words a search engine doesn’t need.

This is where WordPress is awesome, once again! Within your post editor you can change your post’s permalink! Simply look under the title for the permalink, click on Edit, and get rid of all those little words (and, the, etc) and keep only the important keywords.

For example, my post, Pixie: My Favorite Color Picker for Graphic and Web Design and Photo Editing used to have a long permalink like this: http://www.ericasays.com/2009/10/pixie-my-favorite-color-picker-for-graphic-and-web-design-and-photo-editing/ However, I’ve shortened it to read: http://www.ericasays.com/2009/10/pixie-free-color-picker/

Here’s a quick video showing how to edit your permalinks!

    Gordie,

I have read and heard that it does, but I’m no SEO expert. :-) It does make sense tho, that stripping unnecessary words from your urls and leaving just the important keywords would help.

    What do you think?

Gosh I don’t know about this feature of WordPress, considering that I’ve been using it for many months now. As much as possible I want to optimize my blog for SEO; having generously shared it here, I will implement this on my blog.

Thank your for this information Madam. :-)

    Walter,

I’m so glad you’ve found this post helpful. I’m no pro at SEO, but I understand this is supposed to be good for optimization. Either way, it’s certainly nice to have shorter links!!
