I grew up listening to music. Mostly classical, with a little old fashioned gospel music thrown in. It wasn’t till I was around 17 that I was introduced to other genres of gospel music, and then a year or two more before I started listening to all kinds. I can honestly say I like all kinds of music. I have favorites, and those I don’t like as much (country and rap) but I can appreciate all genres.
I think it was my husband (then boyfriend) who first introduced me to U2. I don’t remember liking the band right off, but some time after my first introduction, I fell in love. I should say, I was impressed both lyrically and musically, but I didn’t know much about the band. Then I read Walk On: The Spiritual Journey Of U2 by Steve Stockman. The book gave me a look into the spiritual lives of the band members, the stories behind the songs, and a huge appreciation for all they have done to make the world a better place.
Since then, I have wanted to actually see and hear the band in concert. Because U2 doesn’t come to the states very often, I knew there was a slim chance of my ever seeing them…
Then came the 360 Tour.
My husband, who is an avid U2 fan, was able to get a couple tickets to the Dallas concert, which was held just days before our anniversary. We decided we’d make it our gift to each other (the tickets aren’t cheap!) and made plans to go.
I can honestly say, seeing U2 live, was the most amazing concert experience of my life. I expected big theatrics, great music, and fun. I got what I expected and more. I was very impressed by Bono’s sincere faith, and the way he shares it, without shame, with a whole stadium full of people. There is no preaching, but there is talk of God and His glory and power. And, there is Bono leading close to 100,000 people in an accapella version of Amazing Grace, which I’m pretty sure could have been heard across Dallas had the top of the Cowboy’s Stadium been open… And then there is my current U2 favorite, Magnificent.
Being the absolute geeks we are, Hubs and I found the stage very impressive. I’m sure everyone did, but when you’ve had some experience with light design for on stage plays, you have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into such a spectacular display. We both decided being a light engineer for U2 would be a pretty awesome job, so long as you weren’t afraid of heights…
If you’ve never listened to U2, or if you’re a fan but don’t own their new album, U2 on Amazon.com, GO GET IT! It is by far my favorite album yet. Once you get it, read the lyrics and come back and let me know what you think!
