There are a few different options for adding media, including photos, video, music, and embedded content to your posts. Today, we’ll cover adding and formatting photos.
Uploading and Inserting an Image:
While in the body of your post content, place your cursor at the beginning of the line you wish the top of your photo to be in line with. (ie. for the following photo, I placed my cursor before the letter T in the word “The”) Above the text editor you’ll see a line that says Upload/Insert, followed by a series of images. The first is for adding photos. Click on this, and a popup will appear. In this window you’ll have several options. For this tutorial we’ll be adding an image From Computer. Click on Select File and browse to the image file you wish to include in your post.
The image will upload automatically, and a portion of it will show in the top left of the window. Beside it you’ll see the file name, file type and date of upload.
Below that are fields you can edit. Give your image a Title. This will not show on the post page, but will be index-able by search engines and if someone mouses-over your image, the Title will appear. Consider a short image description.
Unless you wish to give your image a viewable Caption, you can leave that field blank. Description is also best left blank unless you’re a photographer who wishes to add information to each photo.
If you’d like to link your image to another site, or the file itself you can place a URL in the Link URL field. Otherwise, leave it blank.
Next, choose your Alignment. The above image is aligned Right. For Size you have several options. Thumbnail will show only a small square of your image. If you use this, I’d advise selecting File URL in the Link URL field so a user can click on your thumbnail to see the whole image. The other sizes will give you an idea of how large they will be by giving your a max dimension for each option.
One you have made your choices and filled in your information, click Insert Into Post. (Note: Save Changes only saves the image and information to the media library, and will not put the image in your post)
Editing an Image:
Once an image is inserted in a post, you’ll be able to review it. If you find you’d like to change it’s size, alignment, or how much space is between the text and the image, you can select the image by clicking on it. In the upper left corner of the image, two buttons will appear. The first is for editing. The second, deletes the image.
Clicking the edit icon brings up a popup window similar to the upload window. You’ll see the same options and you’ll be able to edit them. At the top of the window will be an Advanced Settings tab. Click that and you’ll get more options.
Scroll on down to Image Properties. If you wish to give your image a Border, enter a number in that field. If you’d like to add a space or padding around your photo so the text isn’t butted right up against it, you can specify space in the Vertical Space and Horizonal Space fields. Note that numbers you place in these fields refer to pixels. 2 is a good size for an image Border. 5 is a good buffer for the Vertical and Horizontal Space.
Once you’ve concluded your edit, click Update and you’ll be returned to your post where you can view your changes.
As always, save your changes by selecting Save As Draft in the top right of the page. If you wish to preview your post, make sure you’ve saved first, and then click Preview!
