At some point, we’ve probably all participated in the #FollowFriday hashtag/recommendations on Twitter. But, just in case you haven’t, or you’ve always wondered what it was…
#FollowFriday is a way of introducing your Twitter followers to people you find interesting, humorous, or educational.
That being said, most people are lazy about it and tend to send out a tweet that looks something like this:
#followfriday @Nikki_S @ResourcefulMom @unmarketing @JessicaKnows, @DannyBrown @courtneydetroit @drmommy @bestbuy @rgremill @jenniferbourn
The problem with the above list is not lack of good people (they are all amazing) it’s a lack of information. When I see a list like this I have no idea why these people are being recommended.
Here are some ideas for promoting those awesome people who’s Twitter updates you look forward to every day:
1. Indiviual Recommendations
Follow @ResourcefulMom for tips on frugal living, summer fun with the kids, fun giveaways and introductions to family friendly companies. #FollowFriday
2. Group Like Tweeps Together
For blogging and social media advice and information follow @ProBlogger @JessicaKnows @DannyBrown @Unmarketing @JenniferBourn and @Typeamom
3. Add a link.
A big #FF to @mikecj who’s giving away his blogging course for free! You’re sure to learn something! http://ow.ly/34WpW #followfriday
4. Quality not Quantity
The more people you recommend, the more you confuse your followers. Introduce them to the best of the best, and save some of those names for next week! (and the week after…)
In short, give your loyal followers a reason to check out your recommendations.
Happy #FollowFriday!

LOL! That is me right there with a whole list of people I recommend and no reason for my followers. I’ll have to do better from now on.
Stopped by to say hi. I hope your weekend was great!
Today I’m celebrating my 2nd Blogoversary with a giveaway of 2 gifts to 2 commenters on the giveaway post. It ends at midnight tonight. Come on over and enter. I’m looking forward to seeing your entry.
Have a wonderful day!
Jennifer,
I don’t think there’s really a “wrong” way of doing #followfriday! There are just ways to improve it, or make your recommendations really stand out.
That being said, there are Fridays when I don’t do it at all. haha

Great info! I am sometimes lazy about FF, but now I am inspired to do better. I do try to make sure I only include people who engage with other people and provide valuable info and links.
On my blog design blog I plan to one day do a series on Twitter. Would it be okay if I quote you, linking back to you, of course?
I’d be honored!

I’m fairly new (behind the times) at Twitter and I’ve never participtated in Follow Friday. Now that I know what it is, (blush) maybe I’ll dive in this week.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’ve been blogging for a long time but just decided to try and ramp it up a bit. I don’t know much about the technical side of social media. Maybe I’ll learn some things from your blog!

Lisa,
I’m so glad you stopped by! I highly recommend you experiment with #FollowFriday and have some fun. Check out some new folks and make new connections.

[...] The #FollowFriday meme on Twitter is something really cool that I rarely find time to participate in. It’s not that I don’t want to, I just hate throwing out a list of names with the #followfriday or #ff hashtag without saying what I think each person should be followed… it’s against my #FollowFriday Policy. Good post for those that are unfamiliar with the concept.
In the offline world you don't say try ABC Steakhouse, you say try ABC Steakhouse because they have great food and service.
Absolutely. I wrote this post a while ago, but I thought it seemed
Seeing a lot of #followfriday lists
fitting to bring it up again.
out there with no reason to follow…
Keep it dusted off, will surely be needed again soon. LOL
